Iona Stern

I was born in London into a creative family where music and art were part of everyday activities and so it was a normal progression to work within the arts.

My silkscreen monotypes are each unique pieces, each painted through a screen. What takes much of my time is mixing a palette – it can take me most of a day. Once ready, I paint fine translucent layers of colour. It’s an unpredictable process and there’s always an element of surprise, but when it works, the results are joyful and full of life.

A former advertising creative director, I now work as a painter printmaker from my London studio. Having spent time in the Cotswolds and by the coast, I take inspiration from what I see around me.

With influence from the post war artists, in particular Patrick Heron and Howard Hodgkin, my oil paintings and monotype silkscreen prints are colourful deconstructed memories of time and place.
