Eddie Rowe

I studied Fine Art at City and Guilds of London Art School. My work has changed a lot over the years and it will continue to do so. I have explored themes of chaos in our modern day society in the form of small post-it-note drawings which I exhibited in my final degree show. Other areas of my work lean towards a sensitive way of mark making through printmaking and drawing. My ‘Ant Attack’ series of etchings explore themes of geometry and explosivity. These etchings were born out of drawings of ants I had studied from a book on insects. Further development and reading then led me to abstracting the form of their bodies, into angular weaponised objects - which I then translated onto the etching plate and brought to life using aquatint.

My painting practice explores the balance and interaction between colours - abstraction that is loosely based under the umbrella of landscape painting. I keep many notebooks where I jot down ideas for paintings. Sometimes these develop into larger drawings, sometimes paintings, other ideas are forgotten or will wait years until they are re-visited. A key idea I explore within my drawing and painting practice is how time-based making can affect the outcome. I complete some drawings in under 10 seconds. Others will take many hours to complete. I apply fast brush strokes, and dab the canvas slowly, rolling the brush to achieve tentative brushstrokes which fit amongst frantic ones. For me, the process of making is a constant rearrangement of thoughts. It is about balancing those intuitive and erratic marks with the deeply considered and carefully placed ones which lies at the heart of what I do.
