Danny Gardner

I create art to tell stories of myth and legend through the quiet, enduring presence of stone. I am drawn to materials with their own history, often carving into limestone reclaimed from European cathedrals or working with marble. For me, stone is the perfect medium to capture ancient narratives in a way that feels both permanent and non-verbal.

My inspiration comes from the world around me — travels, architecture and religious motifs. I am particularly fascinated by the language of hands. I love how the smallest shift in a gesture can completely change a message, and I try to capture that subtle communication in every sculpture.

While stone is my primary focus, I also create paintings inspired by the light and structure of Northern European stained glass. Like my sculpture, these paintings are somewhat abstract; I prefer to leave space for the viewer to find their own meaning rather than dictating a single story.

In my studio, I don’t aim for clinical perfection. I welcome the mishaps and natural flaws that happen during the carving process. To me, these imperfections are part of the story, making each piece a collaboration between my hands and the history of the stone itself.
