Muriel's Magpie

Mary King and Mardi Smith are back for their 4th BEAT, they are two artist educators creating in multiple mediums including printmaking, illustration, acrylic painting, collage, clay and recycled materials.

Mary hand draws detailed custom illustrations; filling a shape, initial or significant number with drawings personal to the life and loves of the client, creating a memento or keepsake of special moments and occasions. Alongside this Mary creates greeting cards in a variety of media, she enjoys teaching a weekly Ceramics Club and offering specialised Art support to local Primary and Secondary Schools. With an interest in the vintage, reclaimed and re-used she relishes using her skills for community and school projects.

Mardi takes inspiration from the details in nature that aren't always noticed, the shape and patterns of natural forms and the shadows they create. Recently being particularly focussed on tree branches and the haphazard yet controlled way in which they present themselves. Mostly creating in acrylic paint and acrylic inks, exploring textures through a range of processes including gel print layering, alcohol resist and use of masking fluid. Mardi's pieces act as a reminder that beauty is always to be found if you look close enough.
