Jalpa Patel

Jalpa Patel's artistic journey began through portraiture and figurative drawing, where she developed a strong foundation in light, composition and tonal relationships. Her early work focused on precision and realism before gradually being drawn towards the expressive possibilities of colour, texture and mixed media, ultimately finding her voice through abstraction.

Working primarily in acrylic, she creates layered mixed media paintings that balance instinct with intention. Experiences of nature, travel and place often provide the starting point for her work, but they rarely remain literal. Shapes, atmosphere and shifting light are absorbed, reinterpreted and gradually transformed through an intuitive painting process.

She does not begin with a fixed outcome. Brush marks, blocks of colour, collage and layered textures build and interact until the composition gradually settles into place. The process moves between structure and looseness, control and instinct. Through glazing, mark making and continual reworking, traces of earlier decisions remain visible beneath the surface, creating a sense of depth and history within each piece.

She works with instinctive colour relationships, bringing together combinations that hold energy and tension without needing to represent the physical world. Rather than simply describing a place, colour becomes a way of communicating atmosphere and emotion. Colour is allowed to exist on its own terms: bright, saturated and unexpected. When placed together, these tones find their own balance and gradually shape the rhythm and atmosphere of the painting.

Although rooted in lived experience of landscape, the work leans toward inner landscapes and emotional space rather than literal scenes. Her background in realism continues to underpin her sense of depth and composition, even as the work embraces bold colour and intuitive process. Rather than offering a fixed narrative, her paintings leave space for viewers to pause, look closely and discover their own connections and interpretations.
