Portraits for NHS Heroes

BEAT artist Stella Tooth takes part in ‘Portraits for NHS Heroes’.

It started with artist Tom Croft offering a free portrait to any NHS worker as a way of thanking them for their work in the fight against coronavirus. It quickly grew into a global scheme and there are now 500 portrait artists paired with medical staff across the world. A movement has grown which not only celebrates the dedication and skill of those on the frontline of the Covid crisis, but brings the art of portraiture into the limelight.

Stella Tooth was paired with Helen Chiverton, a paramedic who responds in an ambulance to 999 calls in London. Helen sent Stella a selfie and told her about her work in the NHS. “I love it because my patients can be new-born, all the way to the very elderly and in every walk and stage of life. At the moment we, like all other areas of medicine and of course plenty of other fields, are finding that everything has changed and is constantly changing as more is learned about this virus. The PPE we are wearing with patients can complicate things, for example by making it much harder to communicate with people, but I am so grateful for it. We are working with firefighters and the AA at the moment who are supporting us on the ambulances, as so many other companies, community groups and individuals are, we notice them all and are so thankful for them, it makes such a difference!"

More about BEAT artist Stella Tooth

Stella Tooth produces uplifting drawings & oil paintings which capture the spirit of her subjects. Her work includes commissioned portraits of people and pets that make the perfect gift.

A founding member of the Lots Road Group of portrait artists, she tutors drawing for Sketchout in the V&A, National Portrait Gallery, Tate Britain and the Courtauld.

Performers also inspire her, both on the street and in venues, and she aims to capture the creative energy of performing live. At a time when our streets have emptied of buskers and the capital’s music venues are closed, her drawings and paintings send a message of hope and remind us of the fabulous music that awaits us after lockdown.

She is Resident Artist at The Half Moon Putney, one of London's iconic music venues where her work, when we come out the other side of this will be on show. You can find work currently available on her website and email her for a price list at: www.stellatooth.co.uk
