Mari & Rabia

Mari and Rabia are 2 modern artists who currently live and work in London. Mari was born in Tokyo to an artistic family and painted throughout her childhood.

She continued painting and exhibiting in Tokyo (while working as a graphic designer and illustrator).

Coming to the UK in 2001, she didn’t pick up a paint brush again until 2020, when the double whammy of lockdown and an autism diagnosis forced her to reassess herself. Expressing herself through her art has been invaluable. For Ealing BEAT 2024 she has also created a number of animal themed pieces that range from painting, collages to sculptures.

Rabia describes her work in this way "Text is the main object of my visuals because the text is considered the most personal language of any human being. Through this unreadable text, I usually describe my personal biography and the truths which one cannot express in a loud voice or which are not acceptable for the society. My work is an amalgamation of text typography and historical figures of the traditional miniature painting of the sub-continent of India.

The combination of text, pop colours and historical figures is a visual appearance of my thoughts about the significance of the history of sub-continent miniature art in past and today, besides this, I want to leave the representation of colouration and compositions of the visuals open for viewers that one may symbolize its many perspectives."
