Safia Aslam

I have a background in printmaking and I also work in mixed media, oil paints, acrylics, watercolours, collage, and lithography.

I paint local architecture which has a therapeutic effect on me. I like to depict womanhood in my paintings through symbols like plaited hair, birds' nests and tea cups. I use yellow colour in my paintings to inspire thoughts of joy, optimism and positivity while also acknowledging the darker emotions of duplicity, caution, egotism and anxiety.

I painted buildings in watercolours because of its unpredictability and brilliance, which gives me the freedom to create an extraordinary yet simple painting that captures the spirit of the world around me.
