Debbie Coates

The artworks that I make are inspired by nature. I grew up in the countryside and love the endless landscapes that change radically as the colours of the sky evolve. To me, the process of making pots is a reflection of this interconnection between the earth and the skies. The pots start as lumps of clay, evolve into perfectly centred objects and then, after an application of powders from the ground which are mixed with water, are exposed to fire and become glistening vessels. I love making functional ceramics and it gives me great pleasure when people welcome my pots into their lives and enjoy using them.
