An exhibition of bather paintings by the sea!

  • Kellie Miller Arts 20 Market Street Brighton, England, BN1 1HH United Kingdom (map)

As temperatures soar, if you fancy a day at the seaside, do pop into Kellie Miller Arts - a beautiful gallery next to Cass Art in Market Street in the heart of Brighton’s lanes.

BEAT member Stella Tooth currently has two artworks in her popular Ischia bather series on show there with others close on hand for those who’d like to see more.

Stella (venue 31 in this year’s BEAT) grew up in Bournemouth - a town which reminded her Neapolitan mother of the Bay of Naples, which holds Capri, and lesser-known Ischia, in its embrace.  She first visited Ischia after reading Elena Ferrante’s ‘My Brilliant Friend’, the first book in the Neapolitan quartet where the island forms the backdrop to the first sexual encounters of protagonists Lenu and Lila.  Sitting in a café overlooking a small, rocky beach close to the causeway of the Castello Aragonese, she found inspiration for this series of oil paintings watching older, female friends sharing their cares, letting it all hang out, just enjoying the ‘dolce fa niente’ of yet another sunny day.  In their interaction she recognised the soothing power of just being by the sea.

Currently on show. Do call Gallery before you plan to visit to check it is still running.
