This is an exciting first for Water Street Gallery – an exhibition with a sole focus on abstraction, both ‘pure’ abstraction and works towards abstraction derived from the visual world.
With the theme of ‘Towards Abstraction’ (rather than pure abstraction) many artists in this exhibition do work from reference points whether oriented in landscape, organic, urban and architecture, expressive, or looking inwardly and through personal experience. These elements are then broken down, abstracted, processed into new forms and visual language. Seeing the works in this exhibition – painting, sculpture, original prints, ceramics – it is apparent that the artists’ knowledge of pure abstraction of the early 20th Century has been absorbed and used freely, moving back and forth from purity to visceral reality, blurring the boundaries, in a good way.'
