My collage un-collage often involves a sampling process akin to sampling in music. Instead of audio tape or music sampling machine I use sellotape to remove the surface of advertising hoarding material. The sellotape cannot be totally controlled. I can choose a bit of material to lift off but then the sellotape having a mind of its own will stick to another bit of poster or itself creating a random element. This random chance element is equivalent to the ‘accidents’ that take place in improvising music. Not having control makes it interesting and exciting and at times frustrating and annoying

I have been influenced by the Nouveau Réalistes and their use of advertising material though unlike them I am working the material. The posters are my palette I like the dot matrix of the printing process it is like looking at cellular structures under a microscope but also analogous to looking at distant galaxies in space through a telescope. Both micro and macro.  Whilst not a main aim the subversion of the advertising narrative is a happy side effect.
