My work is essentially abstract although sometimes inspired by certain places or memories. My paintings are begun in an exploratory open way using charcoal or painted marks. After having established and mixed a chosen range of colours, always using acrylic, I then start painting using large brushes with rapid strokes. The final image only emerges after a process of development and change and I am always ready to exploit the happy accident.  My work has previously been more closely related to the landscape but recently I have wanted the paintings to be a more pure expression of the intrinsic qualities of painting such as movement, colour and light. I am attempting to to produce exciting, evocative paintings which set up an open ended dialogue with the viewer.
